Megan Erasmus is a South African curator, professional fine artist and concept writer residing in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Erasmus specialises in exhibition curating, professional art practice, concept development, art event management, gallery management, exhibition design and visual communication. Erasmus has exhibited and curated both locally and internationally. Furthermore, she has expertise in art collection management and subsequent academic research skills focussing on both African and international contemporary art. Erasmus is also busy with her PhD, exploring both traditional and high tech mediums of art creation and curation. In 2015 she completed a Master’s degree in Visual Arts within the interdisciplinary field of art and science, specialising in bio art and ethics. As an artist, her field of interest lies in the resistance against unethical practices on living beings through the application of bio art, transgenic art and biotechnology. Erasmus has been exhibiting professionally since 2007. Her artworks are included in public and private collections worldwide.
As a curator, Erasmus spent the last five years focussing on the expansion of her knowledge within the private sector of curating. Together with a few amazing and diverse teams, she has successfully planned over 25 exhibitions since 2014. She mainly focusses on exhibitions where multiple disciplines of art, science, technology and design overlap, exploring and introducing new media with intricate concepts to the public. Erasmus has experienced all phases of producing an exhibition, both technical and creative. From drafting concepts and designs, preparing open calls, formulating proposals, communication with artists, marketing to preparing condition reports are all aspects she has expanded her knowledge in. Her expertise include working with both traditional and contemporary art exhibitions, including traditional and contemporary African art, traditional and contemporary international art, academic art, educational art, social art, bio art, tech art, sound art, kinetic art, sustainable art and design, wearable art and more. The beauty about new media art is its dynamic nature to introduce important concepts where life as we know it is in play. The problem is often its accessibility to the broader public. Through carefully considered curatorship, focussed hard work and creative execution, art can shed light on issues from complex communal systems to private inner thoughts. A mirror she loves holding up.
As a South African curator from complex political, economical and cultural systems, curating allowed her to shed light on diverse local and international issues by creating exhibitions that are innovative and creatively accessible for viewers. Her experience and passion for diversity can positively compliment the cultural climate of Amsterdam.
